If learning is child-led… how is anything actually planned?
It’s a question many parents ask when they first hear about play-based or child-led learning.
At The Nook Nursery in Leyton, we don’t follow rigid, pre-set activities for every child. But that doesn’t mean there’s no planning.
Instead, we use EYFS in-the-moment planning — a thoughtful, responsive way of supporting children’s learning as it happens.
What Is EYFS In-the-Moment Planning?
EYFS In-the-moment planning means we start with the child.
Rather than deciding in advance exactly what every child will do, we:
- Observe what they’re interested in
- Notice what they’re trying to figure out
- Respond in real time to extend their learning
It’s not about stepping back — it’s about being fully present.
Our practitioners are constantly watching, listening, and thinking:
This approach is widely used in planning in early years settings, particularly in child-led nurseries.
What is this child exploring?
How can I support or extend this?
What EYFS In-the-Moment Planning Looks Like in Practice
It often looks simple from the outside.

A child might be:
- Pouring water between containers
- Building and rebuilding a tower
- Playing alongside another child
But in those moments, there’s a lot happening.
A practitioner might:
- Introduce new language (“full”, “empty”, “more”)
- Add a new resource to extend thinking
- Ask a gentle question
- Or simply give the child time to explore
That one moment can support:
- Early maths
- Communication and language
- Problem-solving
- Physical coordination
All through something the child is genuinely interested in.
This is how learning through play in nursery supports real development. This approach ensures children’s development is supported in line with the EYFS, even without fixed, pre-planned activities.
How Is This Still “Planning”?
This is often the biggest misconception.
In-the-moment planning doesn’t mean no planning — it means a different kind of planning in Early Years settings.
Instead of planning activities in advance, we plan:
- The environment
- The resources available
- How we observe and respond
- How we support each child’s development over time
Our team use their knowledge of child development and the EYFS to make sure every child is progressing.
It’s structured — just not scripted.
What In-The-Moment Planning Does NOT Mean
EYFS in-the-moment planning is often misunderstood, so it’s helpful to be clear about what it doesn’t mean in a nursery setting.
❌ It Doesn’t Mean No Structure in Nursery
Our days still have a clear rhythm:
- Mealtimes
- Outdoor play
- Rest and quiet moments
- Shared experiences
Children feel secure because the day is predictable.
❌ It Doesn’t Mean Children Are Left Alone
Practitioners are actively involved.
They observe, guide, support, and build strong relationships with each child.
Every child has a key worker who understands their needs, interests, and development.
❌ It Doesn’t Mean Less Learning Through Play
In fact, children often learn more deeply this way.
When they are engaged in something they care about, they:
- Focus for longer
- Explore more deeply
- Retain what they learn
Our approach sits alongside how we keep children safe in nursery, ensuring children are supported at all times.
Why EYFS In-the-Moment Planning Works so Well
Children are naturally curious, and research from organisations such as the National Day Nurseries Association shows that play-based learning supports strong early development.
When learning starts with their interests, it becomes meaningful.
They’re not being moved from one activity to another — they’re following their own ideas, with skilled adults supporting them along the way.
When children feel safe and settled during the settling-in process, they’re more able to explore and learn.
This builds:
- Confidence
- Independence
- Curiosity
- A genuine love of learning

See It for Yourself
In-the-moment planning is much easier to understand when you see it in action.
We’d love to show you how our team support children’s learning throughout the day, and talk you through what you’re seeing.
